Here’s a thread of the significance and history of our calendars: 1/
Today, September 11th is the first day of the month of Thout. This marks year 6262 in the Ancient Egyptian calendar and year 1737 within the Coptic calendar. 2/
Over 1700 years ago (and still to this day) the indigenous Coptic Christian community of Egypt started undergoing severe persecution, discrimination and colonization. As a result, the Coptic church decided to memorialize the deaths and martyrdom of these countless members. 3/
In the year 284 AD, it was then declared to be 1 AM (anno martyria- the year of the Martyrs) thus making today year 1737 in the Coptic calendar. 4/
Members of the Coptic community still celebrate Nayrouz- the Coptic new year by eating Red dates. The red symbolizes the blood of these martyrs, the white interior representing their pureness of heart and the seed representing their solid faith.
So Nofri rombi emwari friends!!
