GAME THREAD 9/11/1985

#StLCards  (82-54) vs. Dwight Gooden (20-4) and the New York Mets (83-53). #LGM

Coleman-7
McGee-8
Herr-4
Van Slyke-9
Pendleton-5
Porter-2
Jorgensen-3
Ozzie-6
Tudor (17-8)
What a pitching matchup tonight! Tudor, who is 16-1 since May 29 vs. the 20-year old phenom, Dwight Gooden, who is 14-1 in that same period.

Tudor has back-to-back shutouts in his last two outings. Last time out, Gooden had 9 shutout IP, but the Mets didn't score until the 13th.
In the #StLCards first, McGee gets a one out single, but is erased on a 6-3 double play. Tudor then sets #LGM down in order in their half.

We’re going to break into the action now and send you to Cincinnati, where history might just be in the making...
Back in New York, both pitchers are (predictably) cruising, having faced the minimum through three innings.

In #StLCards  4th, McGee gets the game's (and his) 2nd hit. With two out, he steals second, but they can't get him home as Gooden strikes out Andy Van Slyke.
The Mets get their first baserunner in the 4th when Wally Backman walks with 1 out. Tudor then gets Keith Hernandez to hit into a fielder’s choice, and Gary Carter K's.
#STLCards #LGM
#StLCards & #LGM both go down in order in the 5th, as do the Birds in the top of the 6th. Rafael Santana leads off bottom of 6th with a single.

After Tudor K's Gooden, he picks off Santana & then K's Mookie Wilson. Both pitchers have each faced only one over the minimum thru 6.
After McGee K's in the 7th, Herr gets a bunt single. Van Slyke flies out but Pendleton singles. With 2 on & 2 out, Porter flies out to right.

Tudor sets Mets down in order in 7th. Gooden walks Jorgensen to lead off the 8th. Cedeno pinch runs & Ozzie walks. 2 on, nobody out...
After Cedeno is out at 3rd on Tudor's fielder’s choice, Ozzie is caught stealing 3rd. Coleman doubles Tudor to 3rd & Gooden walks McGee.

With 2 out and the bases loaded, #StLCards  RBI leader, Tom Herr comes to the plate. Gooden gets him to foul out to third. Still no score!
In bottom of the 8th, Darryl Strawberry leads off with a single, but George Foster hits into a 5-4-3 DP and Ray Knight flies out. After 8, 0-0.

In 9th, Gooden sets #StLCards  down in order. Tudor returns favor, even as the #LGM hit for Gooden. After 9, he's faced 1 over minimum.
Jesse Orosco comes on to pitch the 10th for #LGM . He gets ahead of #StLCards   1B Cesar Cedeno 0-2...then this happens:
Wally Backman leads off 10th with single, just 3rd hit of game for #Mets. Former #StLCards  1B Keith Hernandez promptly lines into a 4-3 DP!

With 2 out in 10th, Gary Carter works a walk out of Tudor. Lenny Dykstra pinch runs and the VERY dangerous Darryl Strawberry comes to bat.
With the count full on Strawberry, representing the winning run for # #LGM , #StLCards  hurler Tudor brings it home...
Going head-to-head with Gooden, Tudor's 10-inning shutout is the definition of "clutch," and ties the #StLCards  for 1st with 25 games left to play in 1985!
