With respect to my colleague @benyt, some of the best journalists in the industry don't break news and have the most credibility in the business.

Daniel Dale has as much credibility as anyone covering the White House, if not more. He does not break news. Some reporters across various beats who "break" news often have minimal credibility. It's not the first or only obligation of journalists.
Some reporters are truly great & "break" news because they have taken the time to develop sourcing, and know the beat. Other reporters break news because of what they're willing to do and withhold for access. So credibility shouldn't be judged on that. It's a bad message to send.
I should also note: Some of the best journalists in the industry are aggregators, feature writers writers, conduct valuable interviews or are simply great fact-checkers and researchers. They are often the best of the field and don't break news.
