Picking up on yesterday's thread on NHS Test and Trace data, PHE's weekly surveillance report now out with data to 6th September.

For week 31/08 to 06/09, there were 970 pillar 1 cases and 11,247 pillar 2 cases.
Pillar 1 positivity rate 0.8% - was 0.6% for NHSTT wk ending 02/09
Pillar 2 positivity rate 4.2%(!) - was 3.0% for NHTT wk ending 02/09
This is a really big jump.

This is a really big jump.
And this is highlighted in the case rates per 100,000.
Note 20-29 and 30-39y/o age groups. But also smaller rises across all› other ages

And as mentioned before, this isn't down to more tests being done. There are increase in positivity rates among all age groups - with huge increase in 85+ (although note case numbers in 85+ are rising but remain relatively low)
This rise for 85+ could be for a range of reasons (incl. chance), pillar 2 is a huge mix - incl community testing + routine care home testing (incl. asymptomatic). Hard to draw any firm conclusions (like home transmission) esp given the equivalent rise isn't seen in 75-85y/o.
But this is v important to keep watching closely given the vulnerability of more elderly people to COVID.
And then as mentioned yesterday, given test processing problems they're being targeted to areas with high case numbers.
This means until testing is sorted, positivity rates likely rise even faster.
And the true case numbers will remain unclear. https://twitter.com/ADMBriggs/status/1304179895166275585?s=20

And despite challenges of symptomatic people getting tested, numbers are clearly rising quickly - showing up in multiple sources (gov data, ONS COVID survey, REACT-1, @timspector's ZOE study)

Finally, as ever, please still isolate and try to get tested if you have symptoms, and follow social distancing, hand washing, masks, etc.
It really does make a difference.
Fingers crossed testing's sorted soon.
