@CharlesPulliam brings up a valuable point: "it’s been very curious to watch new, Black characters like Naomi and Duke Thomas pop up and then gradually fade into the background of other series in a way that doesn’t exactly engender all that much excitement around them."
It's true. There was editorial/media coverage for Naomi while the series was a periodical and then a book—and new characters like Sojourner "Jo" Mullein in Far Sector have some support—but over time it fades. I haven't seen mainstream coverage on either in a few months.
Charles continues: "the common thought here is that a character’s prominence is determined purely by their popularity. But in reality, a character’s resonance with an audience is also the product of how a company handles them in terms of presentation, promotion, and attention."
And Charles is right. I take that criticism to heart. I'm here to do the work, and to learn and be better. This industry needs warriors, fighters, healers, paladins: champions. I'm Team DC through and through, and the future is mine to fight for.
