Forgetting Krugman for a second, I want to know if the @nytimes will hire *multiple* Muslim op-ed columnists.

Surely that‘d go a long way to begin undoing the harm of how media platforms profit off anti-Muslim racism while providing ample space to revisionists & warmongers.
There’s accountability for people saying dumb things.

And then there’s how institutions need to shift to undo the harm against marginalized communities.

Anti-Muslim racism is deeply prevalent—Donald Trump won an election on it. It’s time institutions did their due diligence.
And this isn’t about representation for the sake of representation bc we know how that gets weaponized.

There‘s plenty of rigorous scholarship, talent, & experience to speak against bad & in favor of good policies within Muslim communities—plural, multi-faceted communities.
There are people commenting, “well, the NYT will find pro-war Muslims”

We don’t stop fighting for the right people to get through the door just bc of how representation has been weaponized by institutions over & over again. That’s a tactic to make us complacent.
Institutions will hire someone from a marginalized group that reaffirms injustice so we will all be quiet about what true representation means.

The point is to *not* comply bc it also undermines the great depth of scholarship we have.
It’s also fine to disagree on the ask. Bring your own.

There’s good in refuting Paul Krugman’s comment so people are unable to rewrite history so easily. How do you move to the institution he works for that has also been complicit in anti-Muslim racism to even larger audiences?
