This is my face when people try to typecast my personality based on what time of year I was born. 1/n
I support you if you feel guided, inspired or moved my astrology. I am okay with it if astrology is a pathway toward wisdom for you.

Pop astrology and instagram astrology are not trying to guide you toward wisdom though, they are using relatable quirks to get clicks and shares and $$$

Maybe this is mostly harmless! It is certainly not an evil force. I’m not oppressed by my star sign. But still it bothers me. Any paradigm that allows for this kind of stereotyping is very concerning to me.

They’ve created an incredibly shareable and popular trend that tried to define *who you inherently are* without using evidence from *what you actually do*.

And the definitions and typecasting of pop astrology are not at all accountable to the actual actions or beliefs of the people they define. You aren’t sensitive because of your empathy; you’re sensitive because of your cancer sun!

This obscures the actual causes of our actions and problems. It also traps us in a “personality profile” we can’t escape from. What if I don’t want to be “like a Virgo”? What if I’m tired of being a “sensitive cancer”? Where is room for evolution? Growth?

There are plenty of ways to describe, compliment or insult me based on who I actually am. I am smart, I am caring, I have accomplished many things. I am also flawed. Not because of when I was born, but because of everything that has happened between then and now.

I understand that pop astrology is FUN and I have the apps! I don’t mean to be such a downer all the damn time! But I’m worried about our desire to stereotype people. I am WORRIED about how comfortable we are analyzing who people are based on what group we can fit them into

It’s worth asking ourselves why we want to see patterns like this. Why do we want to put people in these groups? Why do we WANT to reduce people’s “selves” to something other than their choices and social circumstances? Where else in our lives are we comfortable doing this?
