I hadn't yet seen the geographic information they now present by map. It's not surprising but it is discouraging. The majority of the cases are from East Somerville, on the "other side" of McGrath Highway.
I think this is subconsciously "other Somerville" for many who live on the west side of the city, around Davis, Porter, or Union Sq. Pointing out the physical, social, and economic divides in our small, dense city is not new or helpful, but the results on health are striking.
And obviously contained in this is an ethnic/racial divide.
I think the city has done a pretty remarkable job of responding COVID-19. A slower restart has helped lower case rates even if that's taken a toll on many businesses. Free testing has been widely and consistently available, even if it's a little hard to access in a timely manner
There's also been a sizable transfer of $$ to ease the ramifications of the lockdown and job losses thanks to groups like #MAMAS and others. The city and its citizens have done a lot to step up. I hope we all continue to do more.
Because it seems clear the virus is affecting those who have to work despite the shutdown
