Thread: Why the results of the poll below show Manchester United fans are clueless about academy? https://twitter.com/manutdmen/status/1304060018669621258
While I appreciate the fans’ involvement in debates over academy, it is worrying how certain young players are being overhyped. Case study: Hannibal Mejbri.
United spent a lot to bring him here, as he is a talented player, but has a lot of work to do. His coaches say so: https://twitter.com/utdreportacad/status/1304009982317391878
The game v Salford just demonstrated certain aspects of the game he must work on, yet again the hype I saw on Twitter showed that fans are confusing goals with brilliant performance. Against Huddersfield, Wood played him as a false 9 & United were having trouble pushing forward.
It is clear, Mejbri won’t be much of a help unless someone is brought upfront. A single player doesn’t win you games no matter how talented he is. Mejbri is no exception.
A part of our fan base tends to overhype players and I’d give you names from former youngsters that were hyped and simply didn’t live up to expectations. Recent name: Angel Gomes
I, for one am glad that the respective managers are picking the winners for the youth awards. Weird situations have happened in the past all due to fans picking popular names over the ones that deserved the award.
In the 2017/18 season James Garner, Lee O’Connor & Tahith Chong were the selected three for voting among fans. Chong spent most of the season with the U23’s while Jimmy & Lee were doing brilliant with the U18’s. The award was for an U18’s player, but the fans voted for Chong.
All because he was known as a name among fans.

In recent events, I even saw some popular accounts here on Twitter slamming the 1996/1997 born players. Currently, from that generation we have: Henderson, Tuanzebe, McTominay, Rashford.
Back to poll results: So they watch about two games of him and 38% of the voters think Mejbri should be promoted to the first team? 😂😂😂

How exactly?
Jimmy Murphy’s biography by @WayneSBarton (I highly recommend you read it) has the answer for the clueless. The Welsh had a theory that many times throughout the players has been proven right.

Every single player has a trajectory of development that one should follow.
If the player’s development is somehow rushed, it could ruin his chances to live up to expectations.

Out of context: Those were Murphy’s thoughts on some of the players who had to play right after the tragedy.
The players were not ready to make a transition from the Central League to the First Division.

Back to Mejbri, a promotion now would literally destroy a chance for his development within the club. Again, here’s what Neil has to say: https://twitter.com/utdreportacad/status/1304009982317391878
