Bad headline-grabbing reporting of science like this absolute drives me nuts. First of all, "strengthening our brain" is an extremely vague, meaningless phrase. Does he mean improving memory? Improving executive functioning? Or the myriad of sub-domains within those functions? + https://twitter.com/Medium/status/1304195214307987457
Even he was specific about which cognitive area is supposedly being strengthened by 2020, he doesn't cite a single study that looks directly at how the pandemic has affected people's cognitive ability (even though there is a ton of research being done on this currently). +
Also, though it may be true that novel, challenging experiences are crucial for cognitive improvement, you also can't ignore that the negative affects of chronic stress on memory and executive control are well-documented. So that must also be taken into consideration when +
making any kind of statement about how the challenges of 2020 affect our brains.
