Instead of our seminar this week, UH Mānoa Oceanography screened @PictureaSciFilm, a new film highlighting the discrimination and abuse that women have faced & still face in science today. This should be required viewing, especially for those who think the playing field is level.
We then had (what seemed to me) a good conversation between faculty, students, and administrators. Not an easy topic and some brave students really led the way. Really tied into the current posts about mentoring being important, but not replacing systemic change.
The film also touched on the extraordinary challenges faced by BIPOC scientists. What is true for sexism is also true for racism: just because you personally might think you haven't observed it or been part of it doesn't mean it isn't pervasive and st that we all need to address.
