The government’s planned approach to Internet regulation led by @S_guilbeault appears premised on higher digital taxes, mandated Cancon payments, and licences to link to news articles. But there are better alternatives on each issue. 1/4 https://twitter.com/mgeist/status/1304085040683520001
Digital sales taxes are paid by consumers, who will face higher prices for Internet services. Companies like Netflix merely collect & remit the tax. Taxing tech earnings in Canada instead would result in a net benefit without the consumer costs. 2/4 https://twitter.com/mgeist/status/1304085040683520001
Internet Cancon regs tough to understand. Netflix top contributor to film/TV production in Canada. @s_guilbeault wants funding for BLM and indigenous content. Doesn’t require CRTC regs and breaking net neutrality. Gov program could achieve same thing. 3/4 https://twitter.com/mgeist/status/1304085040683520001
Mandated licences for linking to news articles is simply inexplicable. Referrals from social media sites generates millions for Canadian news orgs. Mandating licences will lead to blocked news sharing, increase misinformation & hurt the media sector. 4/4 https://twitter.com/mgeist/status/1304085040683520001
