Rant time.
In Dublin right now, within 10 miles of the spire, 6 public hospitals are all making their own plan to deal with a second wave of Covid. Simultaneously, those 6 hospitals are all trying to relaunch services across all the chronic disease domains. That’s six small to
Medium sized IBD units, epilepsy, arthritis services, stroke services, diabetes services, cardiology labs, endoscopy units, all basically trying to do their own thing, while those who lead them are all throwing shapes at pretending to be Covid specialists and general physicians
This is, needless to say, mental.
There is to my knowledge, no similar sized city in Europe to Dublin that would do this. The duplication, triplication, sextuplication of services is Stone mad. Dublin needs probably 2, certainly no more than 3 hospital trusts and the current places should be forced at gunpoint to
amalgamate. But instead medical politics, local and national politics, and managerial inertia just lets this happen. This is one of the ways the game is going to have to change in the new order of things. Appoint a medical csar in Dublin, independent of the hospitals and medical
schools to reorganise services in the interest of patients. There’s a ridiculous amount of medical, nursing and healthcare professional talent in this town, it could be a world leader, let’s get it done already.
