90s Black TV fathers were almost always conservative. It upheld the absent Black father stereotype as a marker of Black political liberalism (get into that). The idea was Black kids needed authoritarian parental structures or else we’d become whatever thug was being juxtaposed
It also helped to point more blame to Black mothers for their “failings” as disciplinarians.
“If there was a father in the home...”
It’s why there was almost always a storyline about some “thug” Black child dating/pursuing somebody daughter. Sometimes he was just misunderstood. Other times he needed mentorship and guidances. Other times he was just always gonna be no good.
