For so many years, practically since I've been alive, Democrats have thought that they could win the respect of Republicans by being polite and letting them have their way every once in a while and not scaring them by progressing too fast.
If you will notice, literally every prominent example of this has resulted in Dems having that shit thrown right back in their faces.
The ones who tried to play nice with the Iraq War zealots and did the "Oh, he's the president, let him just have this, he feels really importantly about it, it's only fair and STOP SAYING WE'RE NOT PATRIOTIC" shuffle are now the *only ones* blamed for the Iraq War.
NAFTA was Reagan's baby. Clinton passed it, at least partially, in the name of bipartisanship. He actually made it slightly less awful, but he gets all the blame and Republicans are all very "Oh we had nothing to do with it!" now. Which, you know, they did.
Gay marriage! Many Dems were scared of upsetting conservatives who "just weren't ready" and thus embraced the civil unions bullshit. Now bigots say "We don't believe anything different than Obama did in 2008!"
Pretty much anything Dems have ever done "in the name of bipartisanship" has not worked out well for them. They have received no thank you cards. And as soon as the thing they "compromised" on is commonly known to be bad, they have gotten all of the blame.
So perhaps this is something they might want to consider the next time they want to pull that shit.
I will however, place a bet right now that if we ever do get Medicare For All, literally EVERY conservative will claim to have been for it all along, what are you even talking about?
