Just attended the funeral of a woman who lived on the ramp of our Fallsway clinic for four years, frequently pushing us away, often talking to people we could not see.

Five years ago, she knocked on my office door to give me a handwritten invitation to her housewarming party. 1/
She was such a big personality & a force of nature. The housewarming was a full-on celebration, attended by reps of half a dozen agencies she wanted to thank for helping her when she was on the streets. She oversaw everything herself - food, decor, guest list... 2/
After five years stably housed and engaged with her family and community, she died suddenly of health complications (likely cardiac) on the morning of a planned marriage to her boyfriend. She was buried in her wedding dress. 3/
As I stood in a socially-distanced line to speak with her brother, I overheard a woman introduce herself as “her neighbor.”

The funeral home room was filled with family & neighbors.

Housing matters. Homelessness is not permanent. 4/4
