I've been thinking, representation in video games is usually centred around gender and race, but not so much on disabilities. I don't think I've played any games in recent memory where your character is disabled; there'll be side characters that are but that's the extent mostly..
... and I can understand it's harder in games since they're usually action oriented most of the time and you can't exactly have a power fantasy when you're playing someone who's physically disabled but maybe there's room for some interesting gameplay mechanics around managing...
... a disability as you play? Though maybe other genres are more suited for this, like story-driven games, horror, puzzle, or maybe more sports games like wheelchair basketball etc. idk, just seems like there's not a lot out there that I'm aware of...
... and now gaming itself is becoming more accessible with customised gaming peripherals, it seems like there's a demographic being somewhat ignored in the games themselves...
...Again, it's a difficult thing for devs to get right without proper insight or firsthand experience; designing or writing a disabled character in a non-forced, sappy, or condescending way but I think it can be done with proper care and awareness...
... I've often wondered how my own illness could be transferred into a game, outside of just a narrative game, I think a horror where you need to manage your oxygen levels by ensuring you have a full or charged O2 canister as you try to escape monsters could be fun...
...your ability to flee creatures lessens the lower your levels get, as well as the psychological aspect etc. not exactly an original idea but at least there's a concept for working a disability into gameplay that has representation and is also enjoyable for able-bodied peeps...
... just some random thoughts, interested what other people think and if there're any games I've missed where you play as a character with a physical disability then let me know plsđź‘Ś
