Can't believe how good the new @marilynmanson record is. There are 10 songs on this thing and there's not one dud, not even a song on which it seems like Manson is going through the motions. He and producer @ShooterJennings really put together something special. A review thread:
The album kicks off with RED BLACK AND BLUE, which in turn kicks off with Manson delivering a menacing monologue. Then tribal drums kick in and start driving up the tempo, accompanied by a heavy bass. Meanwhile MM either describes a relationship gone sour or his feelings about
the current state of the USA. As he screams the song title's words distorted, buzzing guitars kick in and paint a perverted picture of upheaval. Those looking for angry Manson are certainly getting their fill here. An explosive starter that keeps you on your toes.
Then it's time for WE ARE CHORUS, the album's title track and 1st single. Which changes moods immediately with acoustic guitar strumming. "In the end we'll all end up in the garbage dump, but I'll be the one holding your hand," Manson croons in this romantic, musical-like anthem.
It's an immediately iconic song that's unlike anything he has ever done and points directly to David Bowie and Elton John, both huge influences on Manson's music. The operatic quality of the song is only further enhanced by the saloon piano that joings in the songs final moments.
DON'T CHASE THE DEAD is a dark, gothy, let's pump up the volume and drive cross-country kind of track. You can imagine yourself burning asphalt in the dark. "If tonight lasts forever it won't matter if there's no tomorrow" Manson sings over atmospheric piano notes & power chords.
Enter PAINT YOU WITH MY LOVE, a retro rock 'n' roll ballad, infused with just the right amount of slide guitar, tongue in cheek lyricism and falsetto ooohs. It's something Twin Peaks' James Hurley wish he could write. Without giving anything away: the climax is a thing to behold.
HALF-WAY & ONE STEP FORWARD uses a hypnotic piano riff to keep you engaged throughout. It's an almost Justin Timberlake-y track, which really underlines Manson's talent when it comes to delivering great hooks while doing his own thing.
"There's a crack in everything, that's how the sunlight gets in," he remarks, immediately twisting a pessimistic notion into an opportunistic one. Might just be one of the most hopeful things the man has ever written.
INFINITE DARKNESS kicks of Side B of the album. This is where things get grimey. And heavy: "You're dead longer than you're alive," Manson screams while threatening, fiery guitar licks swirl around his voice. PERFUME then replaces menace with swagger. Tons of it. Defo danceable.
KEEP MY HEAD TOGETHER builds off of a great uptempo drum beat, puts a fuzzy bass upfront in the mix and decorates the song's edges with shimmering synth work. Before the guitar adds extra backbone in the latter 3rd of the song. "I eat glass and I spit diamonds." Sure, Mr. Manson.
And then the apotheosis: SOLVE COAGULA and BROKEN NEEDLE function as an excellent two-part closing track. Part 1 is about accepting your own shortcomings, part 2 about the fear of how they may impact someone else. It's a heartbreaking end of the record, but both in terms of
lyrics and music a definite highlight. This is where the entire record has been carefully leading to. "Are you alright? 'Cause I'm not okay," Manson belts, noticeably vulnerable. "I am a needle, dig in your grooves," MM laments, while the drums intensify, a Garson-like piano
hauntingly plays until the final note is heard and silence follows. Leaving you with, quite frankly, one of the best records and musical journeys Marilyn Manson has ever delivered. And an album that could as easily be an introduction to a new Manson, for fans and newcomers alike.
Given the fact I am an editor I now cringe reading some typos here and there. ANYWAY: We Are Chaos is an accomplishment, check it out here: https://open.spotify.com/album/3VOlp4Dion1qjjvhmuDZvV?si=wd20lwhvQ8ivlAucTisXiQ. Or, you know, buy it. Twice.
