Today's the day: I'm moving to #Taiwan! I'm excited and nervous. Months of planning and yet something can still go wrong. I'm still anticipating hiccups.

This thread will document the (hopefully) ~30 hour trip from my Mom's home in Virginia to the quarantine hotel in Taipei. 1/
First leg of the trip is a drive from Richmond to Dulles Airport outside Washington DC. I'll fly from DC to New York to catch the flight to Taipei.

Everything I'm taking with me fits in these four bags. I won't be back Stateside for at least 10 months. 2/
One more photo with the family before I go 3/
Here in DC now waiting for my flight to JFK. It's a ghost town. Most of the shops and restaurants are closed. Wondering what JFK will be like. 4/
So far I have overheard TWO different people catching this flight to New York are also on their way to Taipei. What are the odds?! 5/
Flight is delayed by an hour. Landing time is only half hour late. If it slips anymore I'm gonna be sweating it. (flight out of JFK is 1:30am, so I guess I have a low threshold for "sweating it"). 6/
Overhearing (through the grapevine) that our airplane has been used to replace another plane with mechanical issues. So, those passengers are good to go, but let's see how they take care of us. 7/
Evidently @delta did in fact take the airplane that was going to carry us (on time) to New York and used it to take another set of passengers to Detroit instead, delaying us by at least two hours. Some people with tighter connection windows are now in trouble. 8/
I'm curious about the wisdom of delaying two planes' worth of passengers instead of just one. I guess there's an algorithm for this, huh? 9/
Now looking at a 2.5 hour delay, with no evidence that this is the end of the pushbacks. Pretty cool to know that our plane WAS here and ready to go. Thanks @Delta.

Let this be a lesson kids ... Always build a 7 hour layover into your flight plans. That's the lesson right? 10/
Other passengers on the verge of missing their connecting flight to Paris are most worried about the logistical challenge of catching a later flight.

"We'll have to get another COVID test," says one.

"This is our third try getting there," says another.
