Today, as the cops who killed George Floyd go to a pretrial hearing, our hearts are full of rage and longing for a system that can deliver more justice for George Floyd's killers than this one can.
We stand with every community member who is pursuing justice because of the pain, anger, and grief that George Floyd's murder has caused.
We notice the real possibility that this case could be moved out of Hennepin County by portraying the lack of trust Minneapolis residents have in the MPD as a bias that would prevent a fair trial.
This is an example of the system twisting to protect itself: MPD is responsible for that breach of trust. It’s legal to sidestep even this performance of accountability, but it’s not justice.
As an abolitionist group, we resist the temptation to believe that prosecution, and less likely, the conviction and imprisonment of police officers like Derek Chauvin is a path to justice for victims of police violence, as history has continued to prove otherwise.
We’re looking for justice through reparations. We’re looking for justice through removing officers and ensuring they don’t hold power again.
And fundamentally, we support and demand the defunding and dismantling of the entire system of police and prisons, investing instead in new systems that bring collective healing and transformation.
As Mariame Kaba and @dreanyc123 have taught us, we want more justice for George Floyd than the system that killed him can deliver.
“We want to direct our energies toward collective strategies that are more likely to be successful in delivering healing & transformation, and to prevent future harms…"
