This is awful news and if the suspension becomes a formal disbanding of the team it will hurt @UNCP_Sports in the long run. I've valued working as a faculty associate with the @UNCP_Golf golf program for over ten years (1/).
Over that time I've seen David Synan (with little support compared to the programs he competed against) recruit and graduate men and women who won conference titles, played in the postseason, set records for academic performance, and were All-Americans (2/)
started businesses, went into medicine, worked in the justice system, became teachers, and got jobs at major corporations, among other things. The golf team contributes to the local community in volunteer hours and . . . (3/)
are a visible at local golf courses like Pinecrest GC and Scotch Meadows CC where (besides stimulating local biz) they showed members and @TheFirstTee participants that UNCP student-athletes were people from a variety of walks of life, other nations, and committed to success (4/)
Obviously, this hurts personally. Golfers and golf alums have been people with whom I formed meaningful relationships. They've had dinner at our home, showed our kids how to swing a club and read them books, and asked for advice on a variety of subjects. (5/)
While people will blame Covid for this event, I know that it is a sign that the school I teach at (not a big R1/D1 school) values athletics as a marketing/advancement tool, rather than as a way to develop people who advance our school's mission (6/)
to "uniquely prepare our students for rewarding careers, postgraduate education, leadership roles, and fulfilling lives [while cultivating] an international perspective, rooted in our service to and appreciation of our multi-ethnic regional society . . . (7/)
because if the Athletic Department wants to do something other than act as window dressing and treat students like revenue streams it will not eliminate a program that sets the standard for achieving those goals.
