I love anime dubs but I will never say that the industry is perfect. We need better wages for staff, more quality control, more open minded audition practices, more communication with fans AND staff, the list goes on. We’re still far off from what I think the ideal should be https://twitter.com/seibaahomu/status/1304265013658558470
There are strong, dedicated individuals and organizations in the industry that are trying to make it better; to set a standard that others could follow. But youll hardly see anyone talk about them or how things could get better cause the conversation shifted in the past few years
To some people, discussions about anime dubs have become less about’s finding solutions to its individual intricacies and more about painting things with a broad stroke. Lumping all studios and individual’s into a box by attributing isolated incidents to everything
And while some of those isolated incidents should be cause for concern as they can act as perfect examples for the direction we don’t want the industry to head towards, painting this picture that those shows ARE the standard is close minded and bordering on disingenuous
The problem is that there are some people who are doing just that, propping up those individual examples or framing them in a specific way to continue facilitating the outrage without really ascertaining what we can learn from them or why they might’ve been handled that way
This doesn’t just apply to anime dubs but outrage for the sake of outrage doesn’t always yield change. Or at least in this specific instance, I don’t think it yields the kind of change that the industry needs. If anything it makes it harder for other voices to be heard
I feel pretty confident in saying that these very people don’t genuinely care about the industry improving or even watch dubs critically, but the problem is when they are the loudest people in the room, it has the potential to drown out those who have those legitimate criticisms
there are those in the industry who know how to separate those two groups of people and I appreciate them for it. But not everyone is like that and it’s frustrating that genuine feedback gets shuffled in with those who have hijacked the conversation because they shout the loudest
And the worst part is, I’m not even 100% sure how to fix this. Reasonable breakdowns and research take a large amount of time. So it’s hard to keep up with the latest drama when it’s easier just to confirm peoples preconceived suspicions and biases
It would be one thing if that “drama” stayed in a specific part of the anime fandom but its bled into others and it’s genuinely upsetting when those that might be curious about this industry but don’t know where to start, have their main exposure be through a skewed lens
Next thing you know, we might have an industry that no longer takes any criticism at all or we have one that ends up bending at the knee to people who genuinely don’t care. Idk I guess I’m just worried to see what might happen if things continue to go in this direction
