A friend asked me if #Trump’s decision to mislead the American public on #COVID19 could be tantamount to genocide. Although arguably poor leadership, I don’t believe it can be called genocide. #BLM is different matter though. 1/5

With #COVID19 there does not appear to be intent to target ‘in whole or in part’ -a particular population, as required by the #Genocide Convention. That said, I believe #BLM could be successfully argued to be genocide, for a few reasons. 2/ 5
1st- #Genocide does not need to be time bound – it can take place over a long period. 2nd- genocide is a policy decision – a series of policy decisions including access to food, health care, housing, and policing can contribute to a foreseeable conclusion. 3/5
Third, no policy decision is a policy decision. The decision not to change policies that target a specific population is a decision to target a specific population. 4/5

In the same way that a strong argument has been brought forward that there is a current #Genocide against Indigenous women in Canada, I believe the same could be made for the Black American population. 5/5
