Tory manifesto pledge, 2019: “the PM... negotiated a great new deal” We’ll get Brexit done.
English voters took them at their word.
Sep 2020, Tory govt says the WA was rushed & a bad deal, contradicting their manifesto pledge, while talks with EU27 are close to collapse. 1/
The Tory party misled voters into supporting a pledge which senior Tory MPs, including the PM who negotiated the WA, now call “a bad deal for the UK”.
Brexit is far from done.
The democratic solution to a serious breach of an election pledge is, normally, a new election. 2/
Opposition MPs should be demanding a GE but it would further destabilise relations with EU27 at a vital moment, as 31st Dec looms. Labour is, for tactical reasons, saying little about the Brexit mess. LibDems are ditching their long standing support for membership of the EU. 3/
Tories have been incapable of getting Brexit done, after 4+ years arguing & telling lies in a referendum & 2 GEs. Tory pledges to deliver a new EU/UK FTA are in ruins. UK is regarded as a global joke & no significant trade deals have been concluded with other countries. 4/
Brexit & pandemic threatens economic chaos in 2021, an emergency requiring exceptional measures. The corrupt, incompetent & delusional Tory govt should resign & support a Govt of National Unity to sort out the mess & conclude negotiations with the EU. Tories failed to do it. 5/
Labour, LibDems, Greens, SNP, Plaid & SDLP must work together & offer an alternative plan, to avoid economic meltdown. UK democracy is failing, voters have been deceived, jobs are being lost, businesses are losing heart & investment is flowing away. 6/
CONservatives are incapable of governing wisely or well. A GNU would offer a way forward but if that's not possible it may soon be time to let Scotland & NI (& maybe Wales?) decide their own futures, break up the UK & let English nationalists go their own deluded way. 7/
