The thing about learning history is it’s all spoilers. You learn the Allies won WWII before you learn how D-Day unfolded. You learn what happened before you learn how it happened, why it was so pivotal, how close it was, how it felt.
I was an 18 year old sophomore at NYU 19 years ago. When future generations learn about that day the one thing that can never fully be communicated is how absolutely unthinkably shocking it all was.
I try to remember that when I think about the historical tragedies, maybe millennia ago, that can often seem like foregone conclusions to people living in a world built by those events and the reactions to them.
