all this said I still wish people would stop posting that Miyazaki take. He was a creep too, it just didn't get in his work very much.
please remember that when he said "otaku ruined anime" what he was probably thinking was that otaku are dirty and unclean, unlike his pure little girls he loved so much.
I say all this firm in my conviction that "Spirited Away" is one of the best movies ever made, but god damn dude, what the fuck.
(Oshii, for the record, is *not* a nobody. He made the Ghost in The Shell films, Patlabor, Angel's Egg etc. A Godfather of hard sci-fi in the medium, but he doesn't make highbrow movies about little girls and dragons, so he doesn't get trotted out by these people)
and I bring none of this up to slam Miyazaki or to excuse the problems that exist now, just to point out that they're endemic to entertainment industries in general. They're solvable, but that requires not pretending things were somehow magically better 40 years ago.
I should probably fixate on this take less but I feel like this is a thing ppl do where they don't resonate with where [medium] is at at the moment so they feel the need to blame it on something. I'm guilty of it myself.

I don't know, maybe I'm projecting.
not that I'm mad at anyone who has ever retweeted that take it's a thing lots of people who're outside the hobby buy into because it like, *seems* true.

eh whatever I'll shut up now. Sorry for the rant. Love you guys. đź’™
