American exceptionalism is wild on the anniversary of 9/11. The attacks were not unprovoked. 9/11 was a tragedy, certainly, but it wasn't America's tragedy alone. Can't talk about 9/11 w/o talking abt American empire, the WoT, the Patriot Act, etc. Brown people were surveilled & harassed before 9/11 but the WoT & P Act legally legitimized their subjugation. Abroad, the Forever War continues to deterritorialize & dehumanize people.

I'm kinda scared tweeting this thread. I feel like Brown folx always have to look over their shoulders when they talk abt 9/11. & I'm in what feels like a doubly precarious situation bc of my place in academia. I think I study the post-9/11 era to better understand that anxiety.
This is the whitest take. To even THINK that anti-Muslim, anti-Brown sentiment & violence didn’t occur is a privilege.
