American exceptionalism is wild on the anniversary of 9/11. The attacks were not unprovoked. 9/11 was a tragedy, certainly, but it wasn't America's tragedy alone. We gotta decenter the US in discourse about the attacks to fully understand it. Context matters, so do ramifications. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1304384845280403456
Can't talk about 9/11 w/o talking abt American empire, the WoT, the Patriot Act, etc. Brown people were surveilled & harassed before 9/11 but the WoT & P Act legally legitimized their subjugation. Abroad, the Forever War continues to deterritorialize & dehumanize people.
Here's a very short list of books by Brown folx that talk abt some of these topics.
-Insurgent Aesthetic- Kapadia
-Terrorist Assemblages- Puar
-This Muslim American Life- Bayoumi
-The Reluctant Fundamentalist- Hamid
-Burnt Shadows- Shamsie
-Once in a Promised Land- Halaby
I'm kinda scared tweeting this thread. I feel like Brown folx always have to look over their shoulders when they talk abt 9/11. & I'm in what feels like a doubly precarious situation bc of my place in academia. I think I study the post-9/11 era to better understand that anxiety.
This is the whitest take. To even THINK that anti-Muslim, anti-Brown sentiment & violence didn’t occur is a privilege. Bayoumi writes, the NYPD “selected mosques as ‘Terrorism Enterprises,’ meaning any visitor to these Muslim houses of worship could be investigated” (5). https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1304385740063805440
