✳️ Listening to a replay of the @rabbleca Green Party Leadership debate on foreign policy #cdnpoli It gets started about 30 mins in #gpcleadership
The moderator is @judyrebick #gpcleadership and we're talking about Canada-China relations now
@AmitaKuttner, whose family is from Hong Kong, says Canada needs to find a balance between taking a tough stance and leaving the door open for diplomatic relations.
I think this is a debate that both @dimitrilascaris & @AnnamiePaul will probably shine. Both have backgrounds working on heavy international files
@courtghoward says it was a poor choice for Canada to detain top Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou #cdnpoli And Canada needs to have its own foreign policy separate from the U.S.
@DavidMerner was the first one to bring up the two Michaels and he says China is one of the most serious threats to Canada in the coming decades (Why: detention of the Michaels, treatment of Uyghurs, aggression in South China Sea and actions in Hong Kong.)
Merner calls China the Leviathan to our west and we need to work allies to confront it.
@dimitrilascaris says Canada needs to build in human rights standards into our trading agreements. But, he says, Canada has no moral authority, because of its treatment of Indigenous persons and arms deals with Saudi Arabia. It's hard for Canada to confront China because of this.
@Glen4Climate says Canada needs to decolonize its foreign industrial operations from extractive to recovery based. He's throwing shade at the Canadian mining industry
