First of all self harm is an addiction , you quite literally get addicted to doing it especially when it’s a coping mechanism for pain or lack there of. So it’s extremely hard for people to just drop everything and stop especially when they don’t have any other way of coping.
90% of people if not all who self harm have experienced some kind of emotional trauma or have some kind of mental illness. Self harm is NOT just for attention and ANYONE , any age , any gender , any race can self harm. It’s not just a bunch of teenage girls being edgy online
Sh twt is a safe space for people as self harm is still a very stigmatized subject and there is not a lot of places available where we can openly talk about it. Everyone here has already been self harm for years and there’s zero encouraging to anyone to start cutting or —
to continue if they’re trying to get clean. I’m currently trying to get clean myself and I’ve gotten so much support from the people on #shtwt .
“Go get help” is one of the most common things we get told and it really isn’t that simple. Imagine if you were in our shoes how hard would it be to tell your family and friends you self harm. Even if you’ve got supportive friends and family it’s a horrible thing to have to
talk about, opening up about mental health is never easy. Think though, of the people who’s parents aren’t supportive, who’s parents are abusive or don’t care. A lot of people if they were to tell their parents it would put them in a place of danger not get them the help they
need. Some parents and friends just don’t care either. So before you go harassing the people here , which by the way mostly are minors. Take a second to think about the subject instead of pretending you’re a licensed psychologist because “selfharm bad”
