Here's some of the key bits from my talk at #ICCH2020
A few years ago I was approached by a doctor who wanted to improve his communication with patients. Having become a CARM Affiliate, I decided this might be a good option. CARM is Conversation Analytic Roleplay Methods http://carmtraining.org
For this project, we video recorded seven ward round consultations between the doctor and his patients. I then analysed these to identify "trainables". Using this analysis, I then facilitated a one-to-one workshop with the doctor to go through the three trainables.
One month following the workshop, we returned to the hospital and recorded nine ward round consultations. I focused our post-workshop analysis on the three trainables. I found that for the two verbal trainables improved but the nonverbal trainable did not.
Being able to identify some of the specific communication issues and then engage the doctor in reflective practice was useful and this method should be considered for future training. #ICCH2020 #MedTwitter #HealthComm #HealthCommunication
Thank you to the four research placement students who assisted with this project - Kanesha Ward, Elly Hibberd, Thomas Rolls, Genevieve Lockhart.

I am hoping to submit this for publication in the coming months if you're keen for more details. 🤞
