Let me call out the sheer stupidity of the leftist appropriation of #BhagatSingh.
When I tweeted this yesterday, many were quick to point out how Bhagat Singh was influenced by Marxist ideologies and how he was an atheist. https://twitter.com/thegeminian_/status/1304043954535501827

Being an atheist and a Marxist has nothing to do with each other, at least in the Indian context. So, citing one as the explanation for the other simply makes no sense.
#BhagatSingh was an atheist, but he was also heavily influenced by the ideology of the Arya Samaj.

Why do you conveniently ignore that part of his life when you make such claims?
Now, about him reading and being influenced by Marx and Lenin. He was opposed to Gandhian ideas of non violence. He believed that violence when used for a legitimate cause was morally justified.

#BhagatSingh is an icon, a hero, not because he was a leftist. He's not remembered for that - he didn't even identify as a communist. His only loyalty was to the country and he believed that his cause is to fight for the country's freedom. Nothing else.
He was enamoured by the revolutionary ideas he read. There's no doubt about that. Apparently, his dying wish was to be allowed to finish studying Lenin's life.
Does that make him a communist? Definitely not. And most definitely not in the sense of the Communists of today.

He believed in the ideology of the left. The left has suffered an ideological decay since then. The left trying to appropriate #BhagatSingh as a leftist is an insult to everything he stood and fought for.
#BhagatSingh doesn't fit into any of the political narratives of today.
He was a nationalist and his only allegiance was to Bharat. He, like many others, thought that Marxism was the way forward to oppose and de-establish the imperial rule.
He had no other agenda or aim.

If you're adamant that you want to appropriate #BhagatSingh as a leftist, let's do that by first accepting the premise that the communism of today has got nothing to do with the Marxism he believed in.
Accept your ideological and moral decay and then we can talk.
