With more than 200 years of history, the Lines of Torres Vedras represent the struggle of #Portugal πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ή to recover its sovereignty during the #Napoleonic wars.
The lines whose name comes from the city of #TorresVedras, are a defensive system πŸ›‘ made up of lines of forts built in secret in order to defend Lisbon during the wars of #Spain and Portugal under the First Empire.
They were built, by order of the future Duke of #Wellington, by Portuguese workers between November 1809 and September 1810 and stopped the Massena offensive started in 1810 during the third #Napoleonic invasion of Portugal.
⚠️ The Historical Route of the Torres Vedras Lines are members of the European Federation of #Napoleonic Cities.
