I've been trying to find a nice way to say that people outside the west coast making haha gender reveal jokes while climate change and crumbling infrastructure destroy my home state are starting to bother me but I haven't figured out how to make it nice yet
Like yeah haha gender reveals are destructive, no shit, but the reason this is happening isn't because some boring cis couple didn't know how to pyrotechnics right, it's because fire season has gotten worse every year because THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING
I have been terrified every time I see a car on fire from ppb's teargas cannisters because I have seen the fire season get worse every fucking year in southern Oregon and like. It was only a matter of time
Or the hilarious "these irresponsible americans are out setting everything on fire" CLIMATE CHANGE HAS MADE THE STATE AS FLAMMABLE AS A BOOK OF MATCHES YOU DOORKNOBS COULD YOU PLEASE GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES
It would just be nice if those of you trying to snark for clout wouldn't mind accurately naming the cause of the fucking crisis
Do you have any idea how much it kills me to say "this isn't actually entirely the fault of the gender reveal and we need to hold the corporations that drive climate change responsible" as a trans guy.
I remember when David moved to Oregon explaining to him how goddamn careful we have to be with our cigarettes in the summer. It is so ridiculously easy to spark fires on the west coast now. We're a fucking tinderbox
This isn't individual error, this is the consequence of years of climate change denial
To be clear, I'm not upset with people who are here, because we're all dealing as best we can in this. I'm upset with people who aren't from here who don't seem to get how terrible the fire seasons have become
Fire season is longer every year. There's less snow every year and that leads to more fire every year. A lot of our fires in the last years aren't Head Empty individuals, they're shit power infrastructure
And guess what, since it's 9/11 I feel the need to mention that six of the Chinook helicopters Oregon would normally be using to fight these fires were deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year
We have NEVER afaik had this many megafires burning at once. This isn't just human error and after years of saying "the smoke is getting worse, the fire seasons are getting worse" it's really frustrating when people from outside of here don't seem to understand wtf is happening
Let me clarify: this isn't INDIVIDUAL human error but it is human caused because it's fucking climate change, and capitalism, and imperialism, and yeah it is killing people and destroying shit and yeah, if you aren't here, your "coping" should probably be less shitty
If you're here and in it and you get how much climate change has fucked us, then this isn't directed at you. But if you're saying shit that says to me that you just do not understand what is happening here, I'd prefer you just shut up.
