thinking about how ingrained gold rewards are in #DnD, even as a DM my go to for a quest reward is a big ol sack of gold. To the point where it's become almost comical—adventurers can be the richest bastards in town, and still get excited by the thought of a dragon's hoard
a good way to tempt a party into a trap is to mention a monetary reward attached to the bait. Need to reward a combat encounter? Well the bandits dont need their loot anymore—just ignore that all of it is stolen from the town you just came from.
fighting undead? a spot of graverobbing never hurt anyone. Nevermind that some of those old graves must have coins that are old enough to no longer be legal tender.
And like. It makes sense. As a DM you want to reward your players for their successes.

As a player, you want to feel like you succeeded, which doesnt always happen unless you walk away with something to show for it
When health potions cost, and new armour costs, and fun enchanted gear costs, of course gold is going to be both more practical and more exciting

but every game ive ever played has eventually fallen into the trap of having too much gold for gold to actually end up meaning anything
the scale becomes too big—the reward progression means that you are gaining more and more gold just to feel successful, but its meaningless

(not to mention how it destroys any context for the worldbuilding—when a couple gold is more money than a peasant will see in a year, but the adventurers are being handed thousands every couple days to the point of probably being richer than the governments funding them...)
anyways, not to be a big socialist on main or anything, but maybe we can reward roleplay and creative combat with more than just money or xp (which has a whole nother issue with it)
no clue what that would be honestly, in my experience the only thing players love more than leveling up and gold is hot npcs to talk to
