the cognitive dissonance of having never forget shit while the country is in the middle of a pandemic, horrific wildfires, and hurricane recovery is going to be kind of intense for a lot of people
having the framework for why it's treated as a day of mourning without actually making any effort to do anything with the memory of it except start wars and be racist helps square why you feel that way

it's much easier to handle the current political moment when you free yourself from the idea that patriotism is a virtue and that you're supposed to have reverence for the concept of america without ever having more than a handwaving explanation for why
and i think it's going to be rough watching the hypocrisy of "never again" after new york was literally put through another similar scale disaster without protective equipment or protection for workers
