José Mujica:- No, in substance, it's much richer but it has historical circumstances that we didn't manage to overcome. There's appalling inequality, despite everything we tried to introduce like the redistribution policy and so on. But there's still huge social debt.

We are living in a complex age. Globalisation isn't an illusion but it's a mistake to view it simply as an excess of financial capital and transitional capital, which it is.

We are living in a marketing socity. Potentially, we all aspire to being voracious consumers.
We have killed old religion but the fact is that the god of our age is the market.
In Latin America, we look at the rich world and we want to consume like the rich world.

But we are dependent on direct foreign investment which brings in capital but forces our economics to absorb the depreciation while the country of origin get the profits. We always need more direct investment but investors impose conditions.

So, there's a race between us to see who can groval the most in order to attract capital and jobs.
People have been taken out of poverty. They have started consuming but always want to consume more. The fact is that it's a never-ending race.

What's to blame is our inability politically to build a clearer vision for ordinary people.

I think we human face a constant inner struggle between conservative forces and progressive forces in an endless swing of the pendulum.
