Here’s what I want Skip Bayless to know: I am a highly competent, highly successful attorney. I am a good friend, a rabid sports fan, a devoted dog lover. And I live with depression.
Because of people like him and the way depression plays with your brain, it took me a long time to call my long-time doctor and address the issue. I finally made that call on a Thursday afternoon, curled up in a ball on the floor of my office hoping no one could hear me.
The nurse who took my call was no-nonsense in the best way. She recognized I had a medical condition that needed treatment. And got me in on Friday. Right away, I was dealing with someone who knew I wasn’t broken or weak. Nor did she think I was just “too sad.”
Since that day nearly a decade ago, I have had so many open conversations with my doctor about my depression just like we talk about my hypothyroidism. Because they are both medical conditions that require monitoring.
Do not let anyone make you feel weak for speaking out, for seeking help. Seeking help is the strongest, bravest thing you can do. Especially with the Skips of the world shaming you. Screw him. Be like me. I’m pretty cool.
