I came to this job after nearly a decade in journalism. In some shops, editors act like barriers, with reporters required to prove a story is worthy. In others, editors offer a helping hand, helping reporters to climb that mountain. At @TheTyee, it’s the latter model (phew!)
The other thing I really like is just how responsive The Tyee is to our readers. And as a reporter, it’s refreshing to be able to do journalism and not have to worry about making a major advertiser mad (not that that’s ever happened to me, nervous laughter).
Many newspapers have been trying to pivot to a subscriber-supported business model, and I subscribe to some of those publications. But putting content behind a paywall can shut people out of vital information. @TheTyee doesn’t have a paywall – everyone can read our stories.
We’re fundraising to hire another editor, and make a podcast. Editors are so important to making journalism happen, especially investigative stories. Podcasts are just great and I wanna learn how to make one!
In conclusion: please think about reading and supporting independent media, whether it’s @TheTyee or another indie publication, like @thenarwhalca @NatObserver @sprawlcalgary @CANADALAND @HalifaxExaminer @capitaldailyvic
(Oh, one more thing that's really refreshing about @TheTyee - no weird hang-ups about avoiding mentioning other media and other reporting in stories. We recognize we work in a media ecosystem, and even have a whole section on our site called "reported elsewhere")
