THREAD: When trump was elected so many orgs sprouted up to try to help change the damage we all saw coming and didnât work hard enough to prevent. 1/
These orgs like @emilyslist, @arenasummit , @SheShouldRun, @EmergeAmerica , and others didnt just ask women, they begged women, especially BIPOC women to run. 2/
And having taken a lot of their courses, I can say they did help to demystify the process of running and supporting candidates. However, for leftist BIPOC women candidates and eventually electeds, like myself, something was missing from the training. 3/
The social emotional support, the preparedness for the abuse that was about to come was missing. The call time was there, the house parties, all that. 4/
But what about the death threats? The racist slurs in our mentions? The dropping of our childrenâs names and our addresses in our emails? Just so we know we arenât completely safe ever. That part of the training was missing. 5/
When the support from local electeds was so strong during my run, for it to vanish so quickly in the face of unending harassment and controversy surrounding our supposed shared values, that feels abusive just the same as the rest of it. 6/
So back to my point. When you ask, nay beg, women, BIPOC women, & LGBTQAI+ folx to run, understand what youâre asking us to do. And if you know whatâs in store for us, donât turn away when it gets heated. Show up for us publicly, like weâre showing up for you, every day.
