We are led to believe that #yegcc is different than other org structures where Boards govern a publicly held corporation. The responsibilities may be different in some respects but the accountability is not. We elected Councillors to represent our interests as the "shareholders". https://twitter.com/davidstaplesyeg/status/1304142083293212672
We have a one Councillor/one vote structure to ensure accountability is spread evenly among all 13 "board members". We also elected them to manage the City (Corporation) and their one direct report, the CEO. The responsibility and accountability for management of the City's
finances is not to be relegated to City Admin. That's the entire job. Represent the interests of #yeg citizens and manage the budget. We repeatedly see a "passing of the buck" with this Council. City Admin is told they "need to take action" in every instance of overspending,
misappropriation, mismanagement, workplace toxicity, etc etc. Re-election campaigns are kicking off as we speak. As Edmontonians, we have a litany of "key indicators" available to us to measure the performance of this Council. How effective was this Council
during the pandemic? What did they do take care of everyday #yeg citizens and the most vulnerable? As we evaluate their new campaign platforms and promises, let's not forget to measure past performance. Voting records mean very little if there is a collective failure
to accomplish that which is in the best interests of #yeg and its residents. They were elected to get things done, not to point fingers and find reasons for not getting along. How long would any of us last on a Board or any position where we failed to perform in key areas?
