If you've been following my tweets over the past few weeks, you've probably seen me talking about the Adoptee Citizenship Act. It's easy to assume that because someone was adopted by U.S. citizens when they were a child, they have U.S. citizenship, too. #Citizenship4Adoptees
But adoption has not and does not always automatically confer citizenship to children adopted by U.S. families, despite our legal adoption decrees stating that adoption gives us all the same rights and privileges as children born to the parents raising them. #Citizenship4Adoptees
According to adoptee-led advocacy group @Adoptees4Just, the U.S. has already deported as many as 50 people who are the legally recognized children of U.S. citizens. #Citizenship4Adoptees
The Adoptee Citizenship Act #HR2731 is a bi-partisan bill with more than 60 co-sponsors that would ensure all adoptees share their U.S. family's citizenship, as they always should have, and allow adoptees who were deported to return home again. #Citizenship4Adoptees
But that can only happen if the bill moves out of the Immigration Subcommittee and onto the Congress floor for a vote before the end of this year. #Citizenship4Adoptees
I'm an adoptee with U.S. citizenship. I call on @RepKenBuck @RepMGS @RepMcClintock @RepDMP @RepGregSteube @JacksonLeeTX18 @RepArmstrongND @RepEscobar @RepLouCorrea to support #Citizenship4Adoptees, restore #adoption’s fundamental promise of a permanent home, and pass #HR2731
