Watching the coverage tonight on #cdnpoli fallout of closing of WE Charity reminds me of one detail that bothered me all along

The Kielburgers repeatedly said that WE wouldn’t profit from the contract, but the math doesn’t add up
Running a summer volunteer program using a reported 450 staff

@ an average of $25 per hour, that’s $7.2 million in gross wages

Another $900,000 in related labour costs, call is $8.5 million
If it wasn’t a pandemic, there might be another $2-4 million in office related costs but working from home, cut that in half

So that’s a maximum of $11 million in direct cost to WE charity
So the Kielberegers clearly didn’t tell the truth about the profitability of the contract that started at $30 million in compensation to WE
I want to add something to this thread about something else that bothers me on this day in #cdnpoli

The opposition is up in arms over a WE charity contract that never actually materialized
Some say the public sector could have managed the program, and we know that would have averaged $100 per hour instead of the estimated $25 per hour that WE would have been paid
Others in the opposition parties say the private sector could have administered this program, and that likely would have cost an average of $200 an hour
Essentially what opposition parties in #cdnpoli are saying is that their friends would have been better at managing the youth volunteer program than the Liberal “friends”

I respect that opposition parties oppose, but this entire scandal is a study in hypocrisy
In a world where win/win scenarios should drive all public sector decisions, this was a lose/lose/lose outcome

The government lost credibility, the young volunteers & their organizations lost opportunities to contribute to our society
The public lost as a result of the controversy and they are losing again having to listen to the spin from all sides of the aisle

There are so many important issues, today more than ever

That this has taken any oxygen is the biggest tragedy
