"The United States, despite its immense wealth, military power and cultural influence, ranks 28th — having slipped from 19th in 2011. The index now puts the United States behind significantly poorer countries, including Estonia, Czech Republic, Cyprus and Greece."
America ranks No. 1 in the world in quality of universities, but No. 91 in access to quality basic education. It leads the world in medical technology, yet we are No. 97 in access to quality health care. It ranks a shameful No. 100 in discrimination against minorities.
A majority of countries have lower homicide rates, and most other advanced countries have lower traffic fatality rates and better sanitation and internet access. “We are no longer the country we like to think we are.. It’s like we’re a developing country.”
Well, it was my goal as a young woman to leave Japan to go work in a developing country.. it seems I may have achieved that goal by coming to America.
I don’t hate developing countries — why would I have wanted to go work in them if I did? And it was an all-American professor who made the comparison.

Also: “Societies that are inclusive, tolerant and better educated are better able to manage the pandemic” — just saying. https://twitter.com/lajayhawk1/status/1304235120040333313
It isn’t a race — surely the goal is for all countries to do better — but since you brought it up..

Japan: Ranked No. 1 for personal safety,* access to electricity, access to quality education, No. 2 for basic human needs

*tho I have separate thots on safety for women https://twitter.com/proudmarxist/status/1304241805920264192
Japan is also No.2 for access to quality healthcare, and life expectancy at 60.

But some notable failures, accdg to this index: GHG emissions (ranked 187), “child stunting” (58), media censorship (65), freedom of expression (59), satisfied demand for contraception (93)
But when you look closely at these indexes you start to see weirdness. Japan is No.1 for “political rights” — really? Also “no data” for primary school enrollment or years of tertiary schooling? Did MEXT not send back its questionnaire?

Also Japan ranks surprisingly low here:

Japan is ranked No. 58 for LGBTQ acceptance (there’s still no marriage equality) https://twitter.com/katbeee/status/1304256134283431942
Back to America tho, I just remembered this picture I took today, while walking the dog, of the state of some of Bushwick’s streets. Seems relevant.
