I understand it's hard to speak to black Zoom screens with names but no faces. I get it. But I won't force students to turn cameras on. I asked them to use profile pictures (with option to have a non-face image). It has helped me a LOT to feel their humanness. Try it
Don't get me wrong. I'd absolutely love it if students turned their cameras on. But every time i ask their feedback on online learning or stuff they wish profs would do, some say they wish they weren't forced to turn cameras on. If I'm the only prof that gives them relief, be it.
Most ppl want cameras on from day 1 to build community. I say the opposite. Give them time to trust you and each other before turning camera on.
This is different from f2f where u don't hide ur face (ha, well now, w masks u do 😷) but u can hide ur words. Now: voice 1st, face 2nd
This reminds me of sthg @Autumm has been saying this week. Think of affordances of restrictions. When u don't have facial expressions, u can't assume engagement or participation. Student voice becomes important, participation more explicit. Voices 1st, faces 2nd
Because think about it. What you're really supposed to be after, is what's in student's heads, and that's what you get by soliciting oral or written participation or polling or annotation in class. Facial expressions don't do that. But i get the emotional need for them
