I just cannot get over how many people don’t get why UK government is tightening restrictions. If we try to go back to normal what happened in feb/March can and will happen again. It would have to get 5-10 times as bad before it subsided naturally, or have multiple waves.
There is no out. We are not through this. If we try to tough it out and go back to normal there are another 400k deaths waiting for us. Maybe that is a price we have to pay if all vaccine trials fail. But that is the price of normality.
The UK has still never reached double digit sero prevalence in aggregate. Herd immunity is several hundred thousand deaths away minimum. Even ignoring Long Covid
The UK government has screwed up in many ways but the basic maths remains unchanged. We are only 10% - 15% of the deaths we need to reach herd immunity. You might talk a good game about letting it run free but there were very few people saying the same as the bodies piled up.
