I’m so mad that I am now going to start a thread tracking the dreadful conditions in quarantine and isolation housing at American colleges and universities.
First up is Florida State University, where students starve.
You can’t get in touch with anyone because there are no staff. Only 2 meals/day on weekends which is—??? not OK? Oh, and no meals AT ALL if you don’t happen to have a Sodexo meal plan. https://www.fsunews.com/story/news/2020/09/10/more-information-surfaces-campus-quarantine/3460509001/

Next we have Indiana University-Bloomington. The facility they have set aside for isolation is so grim and run down that this student held out for only 2 days before she was so depressed her parents got worried & came & got her. Disgusting food, etc.

Please reply to this thread with other examples that you know of and I will add them. Thank you.
Next up, please enjoy the following series from New York University’s quarantine debacle. #NYU apparently could not get its shit together in order to deliver meals to its students during their quarantine.
another tikTok about #NYU mismanaging the logistics of its quarantine
More NYU quarantine failure
ugh, NYU, just... ugh
That’s it for bashing NYU, but there are more out there, and you get the idea.
h/t @Callalily57 for this story from University of Iowa — the running theme of missed meals is here, of course, as well as run-down facility being used to house kids already stressed & scared b/c they tested positive
one person had a panic attack

The theme in all these stories is: neglect.
They throw these students into a warehouse situation and then forget about them. At Boston University, a student tells the school she’s going into lockdown w/ only 2 days of her meds. Their response? “Oh well”

University of Missouri (aka Mizzou) is not feeding its quarantined students adequately. And they’re tweeting about it. https://twitter.com/rachel_cook24/status/1303088435641692160
Also, I hope that the NYU students know that they started a whole genre. Here is a Mizzou TikTok from quarantine copying the NYU format
More seriously: once again, they just aren’t feeding these students. University of Missouri

Idk what to even say about Mizzou at this point, uh https://twitter.com/UofMisery/status/1303108021611122688
Warehousing quarantined students off-campus and then starving them. I guarantee you that University of Missouri students are paying attention and they will NOT be cooperating with contact tracers in future b/c they won’t want their friends to STARVE. https://twitter.com/UofMisery/status/1303108894697426944
But even the students who want to get put into quarantine b/c they know they’re a danger to those around them...can’t get put in quarantine??
Oh man. Mizzou is clearly drowning. They wanted in-person Fall 2020 without having to hire & pay for the ppl to run it. https://twitter.com/uofmisery/status/1303109551961628683

Just an editorial note, mid-thread: once these schools decided to do in-person Fall 2020, it was on them to
- set aside quarantine housing
- hire adequate foodservice, housekeeping, healthcare, and other staff
- manage the logistics
They all knew this would happen.

At Virginia Commonwealth University, the quarantine theme of starvation continues. A student went 3 days without a single meal being delivered.
When asked for comment, VCU administrators blame the students for not being prepared. Fucking assholes https://commonwealthtimes.org/2020/09/09/students-voice-isolation-housing-concerns/

San Diego State University simply doesn’t have adequate isolation beds. This is a horrifying story of a student with a bad case of COVID-19 who wants to go into isolation, and the university’s like “oops, we have no where to send you” https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/covid-19-positive-student-says-sdsu-was-slow-to-make-isolation-housing-available/2399634/
i had just added VCU to the thread a tweet or so ago—looks like this is a totally different article w/ even more problems to report. they’re screwing up badly over there. https://twitter.com/graceloum/status/1304174772515934209
From the VCU article just prior: “If they violated the rules and left their room, they would face suspension and the cancellation of their housing contract, a cost of about $3,400 [...] without a refund.”
choice: starve or get suspended & lose $3.4k.

This is a TikTok from Indiana University-Bloomington’s quarantine dorm, Ashton, a true shithole on campus that hasn’t been used as a dorm in many years b/c of the black mold and general decrepitude. Doesn’t look like a lot of effort went into prepping it for these students.
A scenario playing out at universities over and over again is that students are forced to leave their dorms with almost no notice b/c the university abruptly realizes it needs additional quarantine space. https://twitter.com/PhD_femme/status/1303771999249092612
University of Tennessee-Knoxville is hardly the only school to do this; University of Virginia recently did the exact same thing https://www.nbc12.com/2020/09/01/students-upset-uva-forces-hundreds-relocate-abandon-housing-plans-overall-feeling-was-betrayal/
Texas State University is about to do the same. https://universitystar.com/42084/news/texas-state-to-no-longer-allow-visitors-in-dorm-rooms/
at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a truly alienating experience of quarantine, including a girl stepping into the shower in her room, then cleaners coming in and spraying everything with disinfectant, including her toothbrush https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2020/08/quarantine-isolation-dorms
Sarah G Rab & others claim that we can’t blame university administrators for choosing in-person Fall 2020 b/c choosing to go online meant financial disaster.
Counterpoint: running quarantine facilities for thousands, testing tens of thousands, etc., will be more expensive.

h/t @LauraMiers for this exposé on University of Michigan’s quarantine housing situation. it’s a link to a reddit thread—these get deleted pretty often so i’m going to submit it to the Wayback Machine for archiving (i do this often anyway) https://twitter.com/umresstaff/status/1304086025418006528
here is the Wayback Machine archived link http://web.archive.org/web/20200911184247/https://www.reddit.com/r/uofm/comments/ipvret/quarantining_at_northwood_no_microwave_to_warm/?utm_name=iossmf
h/t @LauraMiers for this Chronicle of Higher Ed story about quarantine at NYU (see also: some of the TikToks from earlier in this thread). This story doesn’t paint as grim a picture, but adds useful context: it’s only worth it if you get a full semester. https://www.chronicle.com/article/life-in-the-quarantine-dorms
h/t @nonmodernist for this story out of University of Georgia, which continues the theme of ~disgusting~ living spaces and intense alienation. these schools are NOT GETTING IT: the subjective experience these kids report is
TRAUMATIZING.
