i have read some settler accounts written by HBC agents, of the deadly shock and grief that took hold of anishinaabe and haudenosaunee hunters as these inexplicable illnesses wiped out whole families, leaving only a handful of survivors who couldn't carry out funerary traditions.
the complaints are centered around the monetary hit taken by the agents themselves as their source of furs slowed - or halted completely, in the case of ojibwe hunters who followed traditional death rites of giving away everything they owned - but you can read between the lines.
they speak of young men who ran out of things to give away and just stopped, and who cut themselves off from home, and lost themselves in drink and hunting until they stopped showing up at the trading posts and were presumed dead.
