And how it turned out to make him millions of dollars.
With three weeks left to go before the event, and 9 months of effort, Roland finally booked Richard to speak.
A name and brand like @richardbranson sells a lot of tickets anywhere he attends.
But how else can you leverage a big name speaker like that to make profit?

1/ Ads Sell Tickets
The first strategy to sell tickets to their event was with paid advertising and email blasts to their lists.
This generated the first round of ticket sales and revenue.

2/ Affiliates re-push
They asked their T&C affiliates to re-push to their email lists.
Even though there were only 3 weeks left until the event, everyone sent out a new email to their affiliate lists announcing Richard’s appearance.
More ticket sales.

3/ Speaker re-shares
All of the speakers were asked to send a new email to their lists.
With a newsletter of their face next to all of the other famous speakers.
This creates a “wow they are speaking on the same stage with Richard Branson effect.”

4/ Earnout Negotiation
Roland was smart and negotiated an “earnout” with their sponsors.
This guaranteed that if T&C generated millions, they have the potential to earn millions more if they surpassed their target financial goal.
More revenue.

5/ VIP Reception
Aside from speaking, Roland negotiated a VIP Reception appearance from Richard.
This was a private dinner at a high-ticket price for a few people.
Roland profited a couple hundred thousand dollars from the reception.

6/ Reception Contest
Guys like Roland are always looking for a reason to mail, so they emailed their list again to giveaway free spots to the VIP Reception.
People had to buy a ticket to T&C for a chance to win the free Reception.

7/ VIP Reception Deals
Before the event, there were people that Roland was trying to make deals with that were drawn-out and not coming to fruition.
He invited those people to the VIP Reception as a guest and finalized the deals he was trying to make.
More revenue.

8/ Podcast Interview
Roland got to interview Richard.
This would become the first episode of his unreleased podcast called “Business Lunch.”
In the background of their interview, he put the branding of his podcast on a giant screen.
This resulted in thousands of downloads.

9/ Apple Negotiation
Roland waited a while to launch his podcast, because he was negotiating with Apple to put a picture of him and Richard on the homepage of iTunes.
In exchange to put his podcast exclusively on Apple Podcasts for 60 days.

10/ Podcast Monetization
Now that Roland has thousands of listeners on his podcast, he can sell advertising space, he can sell his own products, and push people back to his email list.
This is getting everything out of what you’ve got.

Roland calls this process “Butterfly Leverage.”
1. Create a core action
2. Brainstorm 5 ways to monetize and leverage that action
3. For each of those 5 things, think about how you can monetize that
4. Keep going

I once wanted to quit entrepreneurship.
I reached out to Roland and told him my story.
His advice:
“Don’t give up. Find someone you like working with and earn in to their business by providing your complementary skills to theirs to fill a gap in the business.”
