"We WON," I said.

But, who were we?

And what did we win?

// A Thread //
I was never a great public speaker.

In 8th grade, I gave 2 piss poor presentations regarding my research papers.

One on climate change, the other on overfishing.

Wordy as fuck

Fast-paced

Sloppy organization

Only bright spots:

I made good eye contact & I loved the topics.
Fall 2015:

I heard of a school Debate Club.

It sounded interesting & a major plus, it was organized by my favorite teacher.

With occasional oversight from another great teacher.

Two of the most intelligent men I've ever met.
So I joined the club.

Formed a team with three great friends, all of us novices.

Week in and week out, we did well.

I learned more about:

- Funneling
- Ethos
- Pathos
- Logos
- Framing

My team ended up placing 3rd that year.

And I won Best First Year Debater.
Is that the win I was talking about?

No.

I had a taste of what could be, and I loved the intellectual rigor of those Tuesday debates.

So I returned the following year.

Grouped up with two of my old teammates and was voted Secretary by my peers.
As the season progressed, three juggernaut teams emerged.

A team headed by the President/VP.

Another team lead by the Treasurer.

And my team.

Soon enough, the first round of the playoffs had arrived.

We beat the Prez/VP duo, and the Treasurer team advanced.

Finals were set.
Full disclosure:

The debate partner of the Treasurer was a childhood friend of mine.

As was my partner.

From Lawrence School to a Middletown Debate finals. Crazy.

Speaking of that finals, we won.

"We WON," I said after the decision.

2nd best high school event for me
Since that event, I've witnessed, judged, and even debated:

- Howard speakers
- Harvard speakers
- Yale speakers
- BU speakers
- Brown speakers

Who knows If I've even won some rounds
From a frantic wreck on the podium to a club speaker at one of the top public universities in the country

A journey that's made me realize something:

Public speaking skills are incredibly important.
What's even better, it's not rocket science.
You don't have to blow $100 a month on a speaking coach promising "secret tips."

Spend $0 and improve your ability to:

- Frame
- Persuade
- Inspire
- Engage
