“GP” is overrated. It will leave you two weeks from now, let alone two years.

Fans will fill stadiums for you 58 years after your debut.

Gatekeepers are the ones who benefit from artists reliant on “GP Support,” b/c it can be easily manipulated by promo & open/closed doors. +
“GP” really represents the temporary attention some non-fans will pay something for a short time if it’s promoted to them enough.

They are not big buyers nor long-term anything. Once the promo goes, they go. +
This gives gatekeepers massive power, but it means artists dependent on so-called “GP” will always end up being replaced by something newer & fading, even if they are releasing quality work. +
Artists able to build & retain actual fanbases are powerful & disruptive, because for them, “GP” is a nice icing on an already-profitable cake. They may choose to promote toward it sometimes, but it means ultimately little to their ongoing success, with their base carries. +
Even more terrifying is an artist like BTS, who has such a high rate of conversion that any “GP” exposure immediately results in high levels of core fanbase growth. This benefits them; it sure doesn’t benefit anyone who wants to control them.
“GP” is never a valid drag. Any artist dependent on it is, if you translate what it means, dependent on label promo to non-fans for their success. If that goes, they go, because the very concept of “GP” is people who are not motivated enough to be fans & search up new releases +
Furthermore, the industry already has massive issues with the fact that streaming is so hugely unprofitable to artists.

“GP” are not your buyers; these days, even fanbases hesitate to buy what they can get for free. Non-fans certainly aren’t buying. +
A big streaming number bolstered by curious non-fans may look nice for bragging rights & even charts, but it’s relatively low profit & it doesn’t fill stadiums and sell concert tickets. +
The idea that a large base is “bad” compared to relying on label-generated “GP Support” is one of the biggest industry myths of our time

We can see it in the unfortunately-dwindling careers of once-massive stars without core support vs the endurance of those with passionate fans
Final Note: In any given year, there are a lot of country & rock artists in the US laughing on their way to the bank b/c while you’re not seeing them pull insane “mainstream” numbers, their fanbases are buying large numbers of expensive albums & concert tickets.
